About

Owned by Members exists to spotlight a different way of doing finance—one where the people who use financial institutions are also the people who own them.

Across the U.S.  financial landscape, the majority of institutions are built to serve shareholders first. Member-owned financial cooperatives—like credit unions and mutual organizations—operate differently. These types of institutions are owned and governed by their members, with decisions guided by long-term stability, fairness, and community benefit rather than profit.

When members are the owners, profits are reinvested to improve rates, reduce fees, strengthen services, and support local communities.
